Helpful Tips For Maintaining Your Windows

The windows in your home have an important job. They keep the weather outside of the home, bring in natural light, and enhance the structural beauty of your home. With all of this responsibility, however, comes the inevitable wear-and-tear from outside debris, temperature fluctuations and the elements.

Here is what a window company in Sterling Heights would recommend for maintaining your windows’ beauty and integrity year-round.

Cleaning Window Panes

For sparkling, streak-free windows, mix together a solution of white distilled vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spritz onto your windows and wipe clean using a microfiber cloth. Avoid using paper towel, which can cause streaking and leave behind small, stubborn fibers.

Choose an Overcast Day

For the best results, clean your windows on an overcast day that isn’t too hot. When sun shines on solution, it causes it to dry to the surface before it can get wiped away. This causes unsightly streaks and spots that make your windows look dirty in spite of your efforts. If anything, try to clean windows before the sun is too high in the sky (typically early morning or late afternoon/early evening.

Cleaning Frames

To keep your frame clean, pay attention to the material that they’re made out of:

  • Wooden Frames: Wipe down regularly using a damp cloth to remove built-up dust and dirt. Be cautious about over-saturating the wood with water, where it can become trapped and cause damage.
  • Vinyl/Aluminum: To clean these frames, all you need is a soft bristle brush and mild detergent. Scrub gently at any stains or built-up gunk that you find, then wipe clean and dry with a microfiber cloth.

Have Regular Inspections Done

At the onset of every season, either conduct a window inspection yourself or call in an expert to handle the task for you. You will want to make sure that all locks are functioning properly, and that windows are able to close all of the way.

Check the weatherstripping to see if it’s worn, and replace if necessary. You should also inspect the frames for signs of swelling, splintering or other damage from the sun or rain. If you notice any gaps around the frame, use caulk or insulation to prevent air from escaping.

Freshen Up Paint

Weather, sunlight and aging can all cause the finish on your window to look faded and dull after a few years. As a general rule of thumb, plan to have your frames repainted or refinished every three to four years. This will improve the curb appeal of your home and make your windows stand out.
